Detroit: In March 2010, students were evacuated from a school after a student detonated a homemade bomb in the building. In June 2009, seven teens, most of them summer school students, were shot at a Detroit bus stop. Then there was young Chris Walker, who lost his life in a shooting incident just off school grounds in Detroit.

In 1992 at the age of 19, Yusef Shakur was a full-fledged product of the gang- and crack-infested Detroit neighborhood known on the street as Zone 8. He was also starting a prison sentence of five to 15 years for assault with intent to commit robbery.
